INTRODUCING ESSAY WRITING
I created this series of image prompts to help my 4eme students to start learning how to write a story in chronological order.I have noticed that essay writing proper begins in 4eme but the students are not well equiped with a good order of ideas.Moreso in this level the scheme already expects them to develop ideas on each subtheme of the modules and we teachers may rush into that without making sure that the learners can identify the various parts of an essay and can orderly present ideas.
This week.I shall be working on the Situation : *Conflict resolution* .So i decided to coin in something under writing that will feed the needs of my learners at the moment without necessarily neglecting the scheme/curriculum.So the lesson shall go thus:
*Lesson 1*
▪️ _RLS: Participating in conflict resolution_
▪️ _Objective:Learners ahould be able to use reciprocal pronouns to suggest two ways to resolve a conflict between friends._
▪️ _Category of action: Speaking_
▪️ _Essential knowledge; -Reciprocal pronouns_
_-Words and expressions used in conflict solving_
_-Speech work (follow scheme)_
*Lesson 2*
▪️ _RLS: Participating in conflict resolution_
▪️ _Category of action: writing_
▪️ _Objective: By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to write a short story about a conflict between two friends that was resolved by the teacher._
▪️ _Essential Knowledge:_ -Parts of an essay
-Details to include in each part of an essay
*Practice*
▪︎Divide the learners in as many groups as you can afford the image prompts. The coloured version will be better if you can afford.A projection of the slide too is a good idea so learners can work individually.Give them a topic to write on (You were present during a fight in class between two learners.Say what happened.)
▪︎Ask the learners to use the images to generate vocabulary for their story. For example the first set of images can generate vocabulary for time, period year season when their story happened. They can add the year, the date if they wish. All that will fall under the introduction. They shall do same for the other parts of the story given that they already have ideas on what details to include in each part.
▪︎Give them enough time to write and then use their ideas to write a story on the board.Take ideas from all the groups and add missing ideas if possible.
▪︎Remember the lesson was contextualised(Classroom situation) You can now broaden the scope as the scheme suggests(Community conflicts)and give that as homework.
Hope it helps you!
